Library Newsletter Article

Sweat trickled down my back and my shirt sleeves clung to my skin. Wiping my forehead I walked through the unfinished space. Noise rang through the air as workmen hammered and banged things into place, and dust clung to my clothes.

The air conditioning was not working. My desk was not ready, and the books were all in dirty, dusty boxes in the lobby. This was the beginning of the library.

Now, the library is in a much better state. The lighting is finished, books are on the shelves and the air conditioning is working! Many students say that the library is their favourite place on campus. I could not agree with them more. Wifi has recently been installed in both buildings, thus providing excellent locations for student evening study. It is a beautiful place to read, study and enjoy.

In the weeks before Sports Day, the library was running a competition of its own.  Each house had to compete against one another in a library scavenger hunt.  Students were given a list of riddles to figure out. The riddles were clues about different locations in the library that the students then had to find. This was a fun activity and it also helped students to become more familiar with their brand new library.

Earlier in the year, Lynda (our head librarian) brought her Learning To Learn classes down to the library to teach them about all the different resources available.  Students learned how to choose the right books for their English language level, as well as how to play different games that help their vocabulary. Students often continue to play these games during their free time.

Part of being an IB school includes learning about different cultures. This past month the library had a fantastic display about a Western autumn celebration: Halloween.

In the library we are excited about new things to come! We will be bringing in a lot of new books this year, and are looking forward to expanding our current selection of English fiction. We believe that reading fiction is one of the best ways for students to develop a love of reading. We will also be working on closely tying in the library to the IB learner profile, Theory of Knowledge and Approaches to Learning.

In closing, if you have not yet visited our awesome library, we encourage you to do so! Please come and see the amazing facilities that your children get to study in.  We will even let you borrow a book.
