CAS can take place outside of scheduled CAS time!

Students are all aware that CAS means Creativity, Activity and Service, and that all 3 of these are a requirement of the CAS program for the IB Diploma. However, this year, there are only 2 CAS hours every week, so how to make sure you have an equal balance of these 3?

Luckily, your CAS portfolio should not only contain the activities that you do in our school’s CAS time.  Your hobbies will likely also count as CAS, so why not write about the activities you have chosen to do in CAS time such as Chinese cooking or 3d design and printing, but also your hobbies that you do outside of school time also?

Creativity means exploring and extending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance.  Learning and practicing a new language, drawing cartoons, learning a musical instrument or creating and choreographing a dance performance are all excellent examples of the sustained, creative effort that can be part of a creativity CAS.

Activity means physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.  Any sports you play from sailing or skiing to table tennis can help you to keep a healthy body and mind.  This is vital for you to be a balanced student, as described in the IB learner profile, and you should activity seek out opportunities to try and learn new sports and activities during your time at AIC.

Service means collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need.  As this is the most difficult for us to arrange in School, it is the most important for you to do outside or at the weekend.  Teach someone something, help people, work with the elderly or the needy.  If you can genuinely help others, you will become a more caring and responsible individual.

Whatever your interests are, CAS should happen outside of the school’s CAS hours as well as within them, and remember that the CAS program aims to develop students who:

? enjoy and find significance in a range of CAS experiences;

? purposefully reflect upon their experiences;

? identify goals, develop strategies and determine further actions for personal growth;

? explore new possibilities, embrace new challenges and adapt to new roles;

? actively participate in planned, sustained and collaborative CAS projects;

? understand they are members of local and global communities with responsibilities towards each other and the environment;

If you have any questions about the CAS program, you can come and find me in the CAS office during break or mentor time, or my classroom, J.4.15.
