Hiatang’s and Daniel’s Mentor group is an amazing, eclectic group of students with a wide variety of skills, talents and backgrounds. These 12 students are headed by Innz, our only DP-2 student. But Innz gets plenty of support from the four DP-1 students, Daisy, Dear, Diana and Ken. Their experience helps the younger, newer students to AIC make successful transitions into sometimes difficult academic and social environments. The five Pre-DP students, Kimberly, Helen, Casper, Chris and Gary, have adjusted extremely well to the demands of the curriculum at AIC. Our two IEP students, Allen and Yuki, have made tremendous strides forward since the beginning of the year and their English skills are now comparable to many of their Pre-DP classmates in the school.
When the group first came together in August, there was a bit of anxiousness and discomfort. But they bonded very quickly during the week of orientation that culminated with the scavenger hunt on Shamian Island. Watching the group work together to solve the puzzles given to them foreshadowed well their common work ethic in the year to come.
This diverse and multi-national, multi-cultural group came to together in September to present a wonderful skit to teach their peers about the mythological origins of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. Their hard-work and humor was evident during that performance, and it was enthusiastically received by the audience.
That same level of hard-work is evident now while they prepare their news and events assembly for the school. On January 26, this group of students will inform and entertain their peers with news of world and unusual activities occurring across the globe. Daisy and Chris will MC the event and all other Mentor group members are charged with contributing talent portions (Innz), humor pieces (Gary and Allen), odd news stories (Diana and Helen), controversial news items (Kimberly and Yuki), cultural history (Casper), entertainment (Ken) and Student Council News (Dear). There is no doubt that their presentation will be a smashing success.
It has been an absolute pleasure watching these young people grow throughout the first half of the year. The younger students are setting themselves up nicely to do very well in the DP program, and the older students have proven themselves more than capable of meeting any challenge in the academic setting. This is a great group of students.
