Change for a Better Self

Welcome back to school. Your relaxing and joyful CNY days have given way to the normal but arduous and challenging life of the school year. Your new semester has started.

Why not make this semester a bit more proactive than most by making some changes about yourself?

Why change?

The only constant in our life is change - unknown

To change or not to change is not a question any more. We are living in a dynamic world full of change. We change for a better self and a better world. Each change is a turning page. It is about closing one chapter and opening another. Changes bring new beginnings, new improvements, new self and excitement to life. When we change we adapt and move forward, when we don’t we move backward.

Why so hard to change?

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself - Leo Tolstoy

Do we change ourselves to adapt to the changing world or do we expect the changing world to adapt to us? I have heard lots of people talking about changing the world, but very few would vow to change themselves. On the one hand, people are tempted to think about changing the people and the world around them the way they like, but on the other hand, they tend to avoid changes and prefer to stay in their own comfort zones.

How to change?

Be the change that you wish to see in the world ― Mahatma Gandhi

While there are tons of tips for change out there, I would focus on two tips. So if you are determined to change yourself, what follows is worth trying.

Firstly, I’d like to say that there is every truth in the quotation by Gandhi. Smile to others if you wish to see their smiles; Be environmentally friendly if you wish to see a clean city; Care about others if you wish to be cared about; Respect others if you wish to be respected. In a word, treat others in the same way as you would like to be treated. Once you stop finding fault in others, return to your inner self and clean it up, you will find yourself changed and the world around you become better and better. So getting started by changing yourself is my first piece of advice about change.

The second is to go for small changes about yourself. This approach will give you confidence in forming positive self-changing habits and see immediate result of change. Examples of small changes might include reducing the number of tardies, setting attainable goals and sticking to them, asking more questions in class, playing less computer games, keeping quiet in places like the library and classrooms when talking is not allowed, being positive about the world, and being economical by not filling your plate with food and then dumping half of it, and so on. So reflect on yourself and decide what small changes you wish to see in yourself.

To conclude, I would like to share what Confucius said about self-improvement with you. It is enlightening to me. “When you see a good person, think of becoming like her/him. When you see someone not so good, reflect on your own weak points.” As long as we keep an open mind to change, change will take place, and you will see a new self because of change.
