AIC Model United Nations (MUN) Earn Top Awards

Weeks of preparation, including reading United Nations’ reports, looking up information on the CIA Factbook website, as well as perusing newspapers and magazines, all culminated on March 20 at the South China Model United Nations Conference at Nansha College Preparatory Academy.
Nineteen eager AIC students, dressed in professional attire, boarded a bus at 6:00 am Friday morning. They slept until the sun came up and then rapidly began practicing their opening speeches, revising their resolutions and studying their country’s viewpoints on the issues of the day. Our students represented the countries of France, Belgium, Portugal, Russia, Iran, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and India on such issues as the European Union, NATO, Security Council, UNICEF, Human Rights and the Environment.
The morning started promptly at 8:15 with a welcome, an inspiring keynote speaker and a video created by the leadership team to introduce the topics to be discussed during the conference. The students also introduced the hard work of one student in creating a mascot for their school; she explained her prototype, designs and final product.
The committees now began, each in their own room, with two committee chairs to direct the delegates. We were honored to have four of our AIC students serve as Chairs for Human Rights, Security Council, UNICEF and Economic and Social Council.
Each student, called a delegate, was required to present a one-to-two minute formal introduction of their country and position on the issues. This was an excellent opportunity for our students to demonstrate their command of language as well as intellect on these world issues.
After the introductions, there was informal lobbying and then debating on issues. The real work came in preparing two resolutions per committee, which then needed to be discussed, voted on and either passed or didn’t pass. It is a great achievement to have a resolution pass – and 80% of the resolutions created by the help of AIC students passed!
The Award Ceremony began at 3:30, where eight of our AIC students were awarded Certificates of Achievement for outstanding contributions. Dear, Hope, Jayant, Kerry, Abdellah, Frida, Weiwei and Sophie all earned awards. It was an action-packed day, but very satisfying.
One of the best parts of being a teacher at AIC is seeing the students be so supportive of each other. It was with great pride that Haitang and I cheered, photographed and beamed smiles for our students’ accomplishments.
